Energy label B: what does it mean and what can you do with it?

Introduction

Contents

What does energy label B mean?

A home with energy label B is reasonably well insulated and has relatively low fossil fuel consumption. This is good for your energy costs and for the climate. The least energy-efficient label is G, while A++++ is the highest classification.

Example of a typical B-label home:

  • Corner house or single-family home of approx. 100 m²
  • Year of manufacture 1975–1985
  • HR boiler
  • No solar panels or heat pump

Many homes built during this period are eligible for a B label when applying for a new label thanks to basic insulation and improved installations.

Requirements for energy label B

The energy label is determined based on fossil energy consumption (kWh per m² per year).
For a B label, this value is between 160 and 190 kWh/m² per year.

With good insulation and a few energy-saving measures, a B label is relatively easy to achieve for most Dutch homes. Think of double glazing, wall insulation, or facade insulation.

From energy label B to energy label A

A better energy label means a higher property value, lower energy bills, and lower CO₂ emissions. But what steps are needed to upgrade a property from label B to label A?

A certified energy consultant always starts with a complete inspection of the home (known as the baseline measurement). Improvement options are then calculated to achieve an A label at the lowest possible cost.

The criteria:

  • A label: less than 160 kWh/m² per year
  • B label: between 160 and 190 kWh/m² per year

For homes built before 1975 with a B label, it is often sufficient to insulate certain parts, such as the roof or cavity walls. Solar panels are also a relatively simple way to improve the label.

Would you like to know exactly which measures are suitable for your home? Renewable Partners will be happy to calculate this for you accurately.

What are the advantages of energy label B?

  • Lower energy bills than with labels C through G
  • A significantly higher property value than with F or G labels
  • Homes with a B label sell faster
  • A solid foundation for easy progression to A, A+, or even higher

I want to upgrade my label!

What is the difference between energy label A and A+++?

The difference lies mainly in the degree of insulation and the proportion of sustainably generated energy. An A label can be achieved with good insulation and an efficient installation. For A+++, more is needed: a large proportion of the energy must be generated sustainably, for example with solar panels and a heat pump.

What requirements must my home meet to qualify for energy label A?

The energy label is determined based on the fossil energy consumption of the home, expressed in kWh/m² per year. For an A label, this value is between 105 and 160 kWh/m² per year. With good insulation, an A label is easily achievable. Homes built after 1991 often already have sufficient basic insulation to fall into this category. Solar panels are therefore not necessarily required to achieve an A label.

What are the benefits of an A label?

  • An A-label home is excellently insulated.
  • You enjoy greater living comfort and lower energy bills.
  • You are contributing to a better climate.
  • Many banks offer interest rate discounts on mortgages for homes with an A label (average 0.1%–0.2%).
  • With an average home value of €387,000, this can amount to savings of €500–€1,500 per year.
  • I want to register my energy label!

While my energy label doesn't matter at all, new residents are going to renovate the entire house, Nik has still made a thorough and clear report of my old farmhouse. TOP job. Thanks
